About El Amistad Club
El Amistad Club of Round Rock, Texas is a non-profit civic organization
created in 1968. The founders joined forces to support efforts emphasizing
education, community services, veterans recognition and Hispanic
cultural awareness. The club planned annual events and invited area
businesses who share a common goal for the good of our community.
El Amistad Club has grown to more than 80 members. Many city, county,
state and area civic leaders have been or are currently active members
of the organization. Our annual membership and sponsorship drive
seeks to expand our marketing base and acquire new members willing
to offer their time, effort, compassion and commitment to our area
youth and the betterment of our community.
Our
core values are our strength. We seek to share our commitment to
education, the community and to inspire the future leaders of tomorrow.
This year alone the club awarded over $64,000 in scholarships. The
club has awarded over $600,000 in total scholarships in its history.
The
club also supports youth leadership development activities provided
by the National Hispanic Institute, such as the Lorenzo De Zavala
Youth Legislative Conference, the Young Leader's Conference, and
the Collegiate World Series. These activities have produced a positive
impact on students by instilling a reverence for their culture,
promoting their leadership potential, and providing an awareness
of government.
The
first civic project sponsored by the club was the development, promotion,
and dedication of "Veterans Memorial Park" in honor of
Robert P. Hernandez. Mr. Hernandez was a citizen of Round Rock who
died in the line of duty while serving in Vietnam.
The
club's premier fund raiser is "Fiesta Amistad" which was originally
held at Veterans Memorial Park on the banks of brushy creek. In
1988, the annual fiesta outgrew its original location and was moved
to the downtown Round Rock. Fiesta Amistad is now
located behind
the McConico/Baca municipal complex at 301 W. Bagdad (intersection
of S. Brown and W. Bagdad). It has continued to grow into Central
Texas' largest Hispanic two day event. Fiesta Amistad is always
held on Memorial Day weekend and features live music, plenty of
food, and family entertainment.
Other
fundraisers organized by the club include an annual Scholarship
Drive Golf Tournament that attracts teams from all over Texas. This
event is held in September and activities include friendly competition,
lunch, a silent auction, door prizes, and trophy presentation. The
club's participation as a vendor in the annual "Frontier Days"
celebrating Round Rock has been a win-win partnership.
"El
amistad es mas que oro!" Friendship is worth more than gold
is the club's motto, and we will continue to extend our hand of
friendship to ensure every deserving student has an opportunity
to realize his or her dreams. "Anyone can go to the moon, but
they can't get there alone."
